Pictures and a video of her below.
The hen is three years old. She is still eating and drinking, and she will walk around, but not much. She still grooms her feathers, and I got a photograph of her doing it. She hasn't layed an egg (but her flock in general rarely lays anymore) and she is unable to jump onto a roosting pole, but she does go inside the coop at night and leaves when let out. She also doesn't lay down much. I am not their primary caretaker, but I do take charge in situations with illnesses and diseases. I am told she started acting like this two nights ago. I just noticed the issue. I haven't picked her up to examine her vent yet, because I wanted to get some help online first.
At first I was convinced she was egg-bound, but some other research has led me to believe there may be other causes, and I don't want to give her the wrong treatment.
  • Egg Yolk Peritonitis- Probably what she has.
  • Coccidia- Not super likely but some sources list her posture (specifically how her neck is) as a symptom.
  • Egg-Binding- My first guess and still possibly the problem.
  • Gapeworm- The person watching her said she opened up her beak and stretched her neck forward three times, with about a ten second gap in between. Only observed once though. She drank water after doing it.
Any suggestions for what she may have or further ways I could test her (without causing harm) would be appreciated.

Update: Inspected her and her stomach was slightly pink-grey and felt a little inflamed with some squishy parts and some harder parts, but that wasn't the worst of it. She had weird insect-like things swarming over the top of her vent when I lifted up the tail feathers to inspect it. I was disgusted and felt horrible for the poor bird. I am about to have someone else take a photo while I hold her, if we can both stomach it. Now I think it is either some maggots or other bug feeding off of her sickness (Egg Yolk Peritonitis) or the problem itself is a worm or insect infection. I think euthanasia might be the only option if medicines aren't an option for treatment. We can't afford surgery.

Her picture is a common poster for egg yolk peritonitis and internal laying. She may be suffering. Symptoms include messy droppings, poor appetite, and crop problems or ascites (water belly) can be common. Can you post a close-up of her vent area? It sounds like she has either lice, but maggots can be a problem when there are droppings stuck and flies have laid eggs. Maggots cause flystrike which can be deadly if all maggots are not removed with soaking. Permethrin dust or spray is a good treatment for lice or mites.

This is some info on the maggots/lice/mites. I also have a picture of her poop. I doubt there is much we can do. There was also some blood and red stuff attached to her. We couldn't get a good picture and I didn't want to hurt her by touching it to get a better shot.

I still cannot tell if it is maggots, but if she has them I would put her down now, or at least soak her bottom in warm soapy water and pull each maggot off. They will eat her alive, and she will suffer a lot. Flystike requires baths a few times to get all of the maggots off, as they will continue to hatch out over the next day.

Those are lice, and lice eggs at the base of the feathers, a lot of them. The permethrin products will treat that. Lice and mites often find a bird that is weakened by something else, so a reproductive problem is likely the cause of her stance. Whether you cull her or treat the lice, all other birds in the flock need to be gone over looking for lice and mites, as they can spread to others. The coop should also be cleaned out and treated. More info on that here, with pictures:

We are planning on euthanizing her, because with her age surgery isn't much of an option for recovery. She is one of the oldest in her flock. I still thank you guy for help with identifying her lice! We will be checking the other chickens, clean out and treat their coop, and treating any chickens we find with lice or eggs.
I'm sure there is a thread for humane euthanasia, so this is the end of my questions on this thread.
Thank you all.
