I had 12 fat beautiful productive layers . a month ago I found one dead beside the coupe during their 5 hour yard time . Thought it was a cat since it wasn't eaten except by other chickens pecking. Two weeks later another day light killing on my back porch . Getting mad at the cat , or what ever . Last night same kind of killing in the coop. No sign of forced entry and not eaten except by pecking. Are they killing each other?

Could be a weasel. Where are you located?

A pet cat will usually leave chickens alone, a chicken can give a cat 'what for". If it's a predator, parts of the body would be eaten or the bird taken away. Are you sure they are not full of worms or diseased? Sorry for your loss :(

I live in pensacola florida ( north west fl) . I don't think they have any problems . They all look fat and healthy and are laying one to two eggs a day. They get tons to eat walking 5 acres with layer feed at night. I could understand chicken killing chicken in the coop like this last one. But in the open if any thing started up there are plenty of places and spaces to hide or get away.

A weasel or mink will kill without eating anything.

Well, they drink the blood......and can get thru very small holes.

Could have been raptor outside...did you look for puncture wounds?

If a mink got in your coop, it most likely would have killed more than just one.
