Chicken layed a rotten egg?

Yesterday my girlfriend brought an egg inside and it was very small. It also felt thin shelled.

I gave it a little squeeze and it EXPLODED!! The inside was all liquid and rotten and I almost threw up.

My question is...why would a chicken lay an egg like that? Is the chicken sick or should I be worried about eating her eggs in the future? Is this normal?

Maybe the egg was exposed to bacteria before it was brought in. How long was it sitting?

I think only since that morning. It was brought in around 2.

I very much doubt the a hen layed a rotten. Not unless she dug it out of a dead chicken.

I would guess that the egg had been out there for a while and was just overlooked. I don't think that a chicken can lay a rotten egg.

It is very possible it got buried beneath the hay...

I just wondered if this was normal or if the chicken was sick or something. I give these eggs away a lot of times to friends and family and if one of them got the eggs I would feel really bad!
