It's funny how chicken math can take over with little or no effort. I already had 12 hens in the "old" coop and then my husband finished building the "Little Deuce Coop" in April, which I had NO problem filling with Silver Spangled Hamburgs, Ameraucanas and Black Copper Marans. There are currently 22 residents in the Little Deuce Coop, but four-6 are roos for sure. They've yet to crow, but when they do, they must be re-homed as we can't keep them. So, that will leave me with MORE room, right? I thought it perfectly reasonable to order a dozen(ish) Ameraucana eggs from 6littlechickies, which should be here in the next day or two. I love the breed and the egg color and, heck: it's spring time, so why not, right? (Here comes the unexpected additions) My daughter's kindergarten class has been learning about chickens while they incubated some egglets. However, someone cranked up the temp to 110 during week two. <sigh> Today was their hatch day and there's just NO way those kids were going to see fuzzy butts in the morning UNLESS...I could come up with some for them. Another BYC member, TheFamilyFlock, informed me that the feed store in her town had day old sexed Buff Orpingtons. DH picked 3 of them up on the way home from work. So, the plan is to bring them to school before the bus arrives tomorrow morning The teacher wants them to believe they hatched from their eggs. I'm not sure whether my 6yr old can restrain herself from telling that they're HERS! LOL Chicken math. The things we do for our kids!
