So glad I found this site. New to chickens, looking at black and blue orpingtons and Splash and partridge bearded silkies to start with. They seem to have nice friendly dispositions, and may get along well. Do you think these would be good choices? I would get 3 of each.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Both of those are normally very calm and gentle breeds, however due to the size difference, I would keep a close eye on things and if you find your Silkies are taking a beating from the larger Orpingtons, I would move them to their own separate enclosure. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Silkies are not the best layers but, they are among the best broodies - for hatching and mothering chicks. Sometimes the rooster will even babysit while mama runs out for fast food , a drink and potty break.

    Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! X2 on the advice from Michael OShay and drumstick diva. Silkies are often at the bottom pecking order and can get easily bullied. Although they are very friendly they can go broody at the drop of a hat.

Wishing you the very best of luck and hope you enjoy BYC :frow

Hello, and welcome to BYC![IMG] I'm glad you joined our community.

Those two breeds are both good choices. Orpingtons and Silkies have similar temperaments, so should get along fine. You will have to watch to make sure that smaller Silkies aren't harmed by the Orpingtons, however.
