    Hi,

I'm a newbie to the site and also to keeping chickens. I live in zone 5 (cold winter). I don't have any chicken yet, but I am planning on getting some soon. I recently came into possession of a chicken coop. I'm now reading any kind of information I can find on raising chicken. I'm trying to figure out if the chicken coop I have is efficient enough and if any modification needs to be made. Also trying to find a suitable location in the yard for it and deciding between chicken run or chicken moat... Learning about breeds... Learning about feeds... Yes, a little bit overwhelming. [IMG]

Check out the coops section. Generally you need 4 sg.ft. per bird inside the coop, and 10 sg.feet per bird outside run. Chickens don't need fancy curtains and chandeliers but, they do need a draft free coop and good ventilation to get thru fierce weather . I think most of the country is getting unusually bitter temps and snow, snow and snow. You don't have to rush - spring is a way off if you intend to get birds then.

A covered run is good for keeping flying predators out and also climbers. If the top is solid material it will offer some protection from rain and snow.
