Chicken noises

My husband and I were in the run with our 8-week old chicks the other day and all of a sudden they all stopped in their tracks and one of them was making a low pitched noise I haven't heard from them yet. We looked everywhere to see if there was something that may have scared them but we didn't notice anything. They literally stayed motionless for a few minutes and one (who is not the rooster) was making the sound. Just curious about what may have been happening so if it's something to look out for at another time I will.

Chickens are amazing as they make different sounds depending on the predator type. Your incident could possibly have been a snake alarm.

Also could have been some bird flying by that you didn't notice at all, but they sure did! The chick that made the noise could be the dominant hen. Your rooster is too young to understand his role in protecting the flock.
