Chicken owner = 6yrs; Duck owner = 6 days!!

Muscovies are great natural broody ducks and in my opinion they are the best tasting duck breed. A muscovy hen can easily raise two broods a year and some instances more are possible. They are a great meat producing breed in my opinion.

X 2 Muscovy are delicious. No reason you can't process KC you'll just have a smaller meal. I get 4 meals ( 2 breasts, 2 leg quarters) for 2 out of 1 muscovy drake.

I have not gotten adult ducks but my muscovy were about 6-8 weeks old when I got them. I left them in their run 24/7 for about 2 weeks. Since then, they put themselves up at night. My chickens and ducks have seperate housing but the ducks go up earlier. If you can leave the KC in the run for a bit and only feed them in there they should realize that is home.

(1) Yes, I knew some one who put a few duck eggs under a broody hen. Although, almost all the eggs had been rained and snowed on. Only one hatched because of this. But she was so cute walking around with one little duckling ;)

(2) Chickens will go to bed as soon as the sun starts to go down. Ducks, although, will not go to bed that quick. They tend to stay up for a while. Mine have always been this way.

(3) My khaki campbell was very shy too. None of my ducks like me to handle them. Although, they do not mind sitting next me, and just watching. My KC was probably my most shy though.

(4) Yes that would be just fine.

(5) I think you could still use them for meat. Although they may not be as good as some other meat birds. (they probably will not have quite as much meat either)

Another Meat and Egg duck to consider and is on the American Livestock Breed conservatory to consider is the Saxony. I got mine from Holderreads and he says his strain will lay over 200 eggs a year. Mine just started laying form last may hatch. I get XL eggs, They are very pretty, sort of cinnamon buff for females with lavender wing feathers (a couple), Males have blue/gray head , white neck ring, burgundy breast, bluegrey feathers and cream ... They also are supposed to be active foragers and good mothers and seem pretty laid back in temperment.
