First time venturing into the world of meat birds. Happened by accident actually. I tried giving away my 4.5 month old barred rock roos but no one would take them. After a week of being awakened by the roos starting to crow (sometimes at 3am???), I decided to put an end to it this weekend.

My mother helped me with the whole process as she fondly remembers doing this regularly in Vietnam when she was a young girl. I cut the end of a traffic cone to create a "killing cone". Because of time constraints we left the guts of the chickens inside. I was at first worried about this but this BYC resource is amazing that I did a quick search and it turns out that's how they did it in the old days.

I put the birds in the fridge for only about 16 hours before eating the first one. Not bad! I had read of people saying the bird might taste gamey or what not but it actually has very good flavor. My mom made a traditional Pho (pronounced "foe") Noodle with the chicken. You just can't get this type of organic nutrition in the stores/restaurants.

Quote:It was... just not at the time we dispatched the chickens. We put the chickens in the fridge overnight and before cooking we took all the insides out. The cold bird did make it a little more difficult.

    That looks wonderful.

I haven't eaten a lot of pho, but the times I've had it I really liked it.
