First time venturing into the world of meat birds. Happened by accident actually. I tried giving away my 4.5 month old barred rock roos but no one would take them. After a week of being awakened by the roos starting to crow (sometimes at 3am???), I decided to put an end to it this weekend. My mother helped me with the whole process as she fondly remembers doing this regularly in Vietnam when she was a young girl. I cut the end of a traffic cone to create a "killing cone". Because of time constraints we left the guts of the chickens inside. I was at first worried about this but this BYC resource is amazing that I did a quick search and it turns out that's how they did it in the old days. I put the birds in the fridge for only about 16 hours before eating the first one. Not bad! I had read of people saying the bird might taste gamey or what not but it actually has very good flavor. My mom made a traditional Pho (pronounced "foe") Noodle with the chicken. You just can't get this type of organic nutrition in the stores/restaurants.
