Using essential oils for bug deterrents

One thing that has been helpful in keeping flies and small insects away from our chickens is a combination of distilled water, lavender and citronella! We don't have an exact formula- typically we fill a spray bottle with the water and about 5 drops lavender and double drops of citronella.

We leave lavender leaves in the nesting boxes for an aromatic stress reliever too, especially right after a run in with predators or bringing in new chickens to the group.
