Chicken Spa Day - Do or Don't

Hi,

Maybe this has already been talked about but, I can't find any posts....

I was give a couple hens over the weekend and they have dirty bottoms, is it possible to have a spa day for them?

And if so what do I wash them off with or is there any tips on how to do it without stressing them out too much???

Warm water... they love it... be careful they don't fall asleep in the warm bath and drown.

Dawn dish detergent or baby shampoo.

You would be surprised at how UN-stressful it is for them to be placed in warm water for a spa treatment.........

When you're washing their bums - do a check to make sure that it is poopy dirt and not lice. I thought one of my chooks had a poopy bottom until I looked closer and there was lice dirt/egg cluster stuck to the base of a few of their feathers around the vent.

Otherwise, they should enjoy their spa day.

think of how relaxing a warm bath makes a person feel -- once they realize you're not trying to stew them, they relax and REALLY enjoy it. You may even have to hold their heads up out of the water !

Gently cuddle them in a towel to absorb most of the water, then you can even blow dry them (heat setting on LOW).
