Hello friends,

As of yesterday, one of my chickens tried to make her usual clucking sound, but it came out very raspy, almost like she was hoarse. Ever since then, she hasn't been able to make her normal noises. She is moving around fine and drinking like normal. What does this mean? Should I take her to the vet?
Thanks!

Hmmmmmm..it looks like a hen with one reservation.....it has very distinct hackle feathering, but other than that I'd say pullet. If she's 5 months old you should start seeing eggs fairly soon. Could be you have an "alto" voice in her!!

I wouldn't worry about it, just keep an eye out for anything else unusual...

Your hen may just be getting her grown up voice, but I would look around for any wet or moldy conditions which can irritate her breathing. Make sure that you have as much ventilation as you can in your coop because that can help to prevent respiratory diseases. She's definitely a hen since she has no pointy saddle feathers.
