Just thought I would share this info that I recieved from a friend of mine.....really gripes my behind

GOT CHICKENS? SAY GOODBYE TO YOUR HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE! Today, Maggie shared her story about how her homeowners insurance was canceled due to her pet chickens. The insurance company was GEICO, and the underwriter that actually canceled the policy was ASI Underwriters. Maggie has had GEICO auto insurance for 26 years! She has had State Farm homeowners insurance for 19 years! She decided to bundle her homeowners policy with her auto policy. BIG MISTAKE! First it was because there was the "potential" of her selling eggs, and that was a risk. Now they tell her that chickens are farm animals and carry diseases. UGH!

Thing is there are a lot of animals (including dogs) that carry diseases.....and you are more likely to get bit by a dog than a chicken!!!

GEICO, through ASI Underwriters cancelled a 26 year customer for having pet chickens... that is just ridiculous. More and more people are getting a few chickens for their backyards, are they really willing to lose all those potential customers without finding out the true fact... Makes me believe that GEICO is not a very smart company.

Well, if carrying disease is reason for cancellation, then every home with children who go to school should be cancelled, too!

Many insurance companies are making it harder and harder to have animals and insurance. If you have horses many companies will not insure you. Now many have chickens on the list. The news really needs to do stories on this so people can protest. I had a neck of a time finding one that was ok with all the different animals I have.....even emu.

    Sunny side up :)
x2 and what about if you are a health care worker, a teacher, a cop, or anyone who works with the general public? How about an insurance salesman? LOL!

Many city type of pets like cats and dogs can harbor diseases that can be transferred to people (zoonosis). Heck mosquitos get on people's property and cause disease. How do they know if the chickens are actually carrying a disease? They would have to test to see if that disease is present just like they would for cats, dogs, or people. It is ridiculous. Perhaps people should get their flock tested by the state and then sue them when they turn up negative. As for selling eggs, a lot of things could possibly be sold from ones home and be hazardous. They should have to prove you are selling eggs.

I firmly believe that my chickens are preventing the spread of disease, specifically tick borne disease. Prior to having our chickens we would have at least a tick or two on us every time we walked to get the mail and back, there were times we had 4 or more on a single person. Since the chickens have been ranging we practically have to roll around in the bushes to get a tick on us. In fact, it has worked so well that the neighbors have been baiting my birds to their houses with bread and other goodies so that the chickens will clear their yards as well.

My agent and I are friends, but the day he tells me some hogwash like this, I'll tell him what he can do with my policy. I don't have to have insurance to start with. I only keep it for my own peace of mind. I'll be darned if I'll let them railroad me over chicken ownership though.
