Chickens eye is grey

We just got some chickens yesterday and one of them hasn't eaten anything and has a grey eye. She just stands there and sleeps. What's wrong with her?

she might be sickly.I would isolate her away from the rest. You might have gotten a bad batch of chickens from a person who has sick chickens.


grey eye and just standing there is a classic case of sickness, it might not be mereks disease. go out and get some poultry medication from Tractor Supply (tylan 50) or durmyacin.also get some applce cider vinegar( horse brand) also at tractor supply.and go get some plain non-fat yougurt to feed your sick chicken.

Also give some to all your birds.

A lot of us here make sure we go to reputable people who we know around the area, but with a new chicken owner, its harder to tell who has good or bad chooks.

just make that chicken its own home and keep it away from the others until its better.

Could you post a photo? Some possibilities are Marek's Disease, Leucosis (similar to Marek's, but usually affects birds over a year of age), some sort of injury to the eye, a respiratory disease, or blindness. In the case of most of those, there is no treatment. An injury might heal, but blindness will only progress, so culling is advisable. If its a respiratory disease, though, treat with an antibiotic like Oxytetracycline (sold under names like Duramycin, Terramycin, Tetroxy HCA-280, etc.). You can usually find antibiotics at a livestock supply store; they're often sold for cattle and other large animals.

Other than that, I would isolate your hen in a warm, clean place. Encourage her to eat with treats (scrambled eggs, etc.), and perhaps put vitamins/electrolytes in her water. Try to minimize stressing her out; just let her rest.

Grey eyes can be caused by several things, including a disease called Marek's, Leukosis, an injury, blindness, and a respiratory disease. There is no treatment for Marek's or Leukosis, so if one of those is the cause, the bird will likely get worse and you should cull. Injuries will heal, but will likely leave some damage, and blindness will get worse. Chickens can live with one blind eye, as long as you don't change the layout of the coop. And, lastly, if it is a respiratory disease, treatment in the form of antibiotics should help. Get some Tylan50 if you can, or some Duramycin or other form of oxytetracycline.
