I am in Southside Virginia, with a second try at chickens coming up.
Last year we made a coop in our yard, with a half dozen Red Sex Link chickens. Our little one loved to play with them and helped to raise them. At just about the same time as they were at laying age, our second child was born. With nobody to take care of the chickens in town, they fended for themselves in the yard. They became raccoon breakfast, whether they roosted in the coop or in a tree.
This year, we will build a better run (With better plans to have them watched while we are on vacation). Wish us luck!
