OK folks! have 3 hens laying right now. My question is to wash off in cold or warm water..or even to wash and if so with what? heard samonella can get in the eggs. Also heard not to use egg crates neighbors are saving for me. Any suggestions so we all don't get sick over here? thanks!

I relish free egg cartons from neighbors and use them all the time. I put the eggs in cartons into the refrigerator. We wash the eggs right before use. No illness here.

Eggs are porous, but they have a protective coating (bloom). If you don't have to clean them that is best. If you do, it's best to clean them by rubbing off any soiled areas. If you have to wash them, use hot water. I read somewhere that cold water will cause the egg to draw stuff into it.

We have washed our eggs in hot/warm water and dried them. We have also used empty egg cartons from neighbors. We have not gotten sick from eggs yet.

Keep your nesting boxes as clean as possible!
