    Hey guys, need some advice/wisdom.

I have ten hens. They are 22 weeks last Saturday. One began laying Sunday before last. Everyday she would lay progressively later, and then today, nothing. Just went out in the dark to inspect the coop, run, etc. No egg. I feel like I'm doing something wrong. This obviously is my first flock.

They are fed well, organically, layer feed, supplements, frsh fruit and veg, the whole bit. They have grit and free choice oyster shells.

What, if anything, am I doing wrong or is this just normal? Please help put my mind at ease...

  2. Be patient, they will lay! It sounds like you are doing everything right, some chickens just take longer to lay than others.

What breed are they? Different breeds lay at different times.

  3. The lay pattern you described is perfectly normal. New layer pullets and even hens don't always lay every 24 hrs. The patten you just described is very natural & normal. That cycle is affected by daylight, weather, feed and the characteristics of that bird.

Wish ya the best. Be patient the eggs will continue.

I have 6 buff Orps, 3 barred rocks and 2 Ameracaunas. Still just the one Buff, but I did find a cold egg in the nest box the following morning. Cold; so I suppose they do lay at night?

  5. New layers often do that. They will get to dropping them a nest box soon. It just takes a while figuring everything out.
