We have three chickens that we've had for about three weeks. We built a nice coop for them, with three separate nesting boxes each filled with hay, raised above the main coop area. We noticed that the hens do not like using these boxes at all, but rather they prefer to either sit in the wood chips on the coop floor, including when they are laying eggs (actually I think only one of them is laying eggs so far.) Is there anything we can do to get them to use their boxes? We thought maybe it's because they don't like being separated, because the boxes have a board separating each one.

Here's a picture showing the inside of the coop and the nesting boxes:

A fake egg or golf ball in the nest helps. They like dark, peace and quiet to lay.

For the first week and a half we did have a golf ball in each box, but we weren't sure if maybe they didn't like the golf balls in there. Perhaps we should put the golf balls back?

I would. They get the idea that it is a safe place for eggs.
