What does it mean when chickens make a purring noise?

You mean trilling? Does it sound like this?

I've always taken that to mean they're happy and content.

It's like the recording, a little throatier perhaps. I'm thrilled they're happy! They were rescued from deplorable conditions and looked terrible. Now they look as if they've been waxed!

I just love that sound, it is like puppy breath or a cat purring - sweet
