Today I decided to use fine grinded natural rock as the first layer in the chicken house, then I laid a semi thick spread of wood shavings over it.
When it was time for the chickens to go in their house, some of them won't go in. They seem to be afraid of the natural rock. I lift them up and put them in and they seem to be ok.?

Does anyone know why they would be afraid or hesitant to go in.
Is the bedding I just mention ok for chicken layers?

  2. Because chickens are scared of anything new. Ever hear the insult where you call someone "chicken"? :yesss:

Give them some time to get used to it.

Why and what kind of rocks did you put in the coop, do you have a picture?

This is a pic my friend had taken of his and that is why I had decided to order some today and put in their house. Its like soft grind up stone, with a few very small bits of crumble stone in between. I put that down , then I put a generous amount of dust free shavings on top.

What purpose does the 'rock' have?
Putting 'dust free' shavings over dusty rock make no sense to me.
I would think they will scratch that stuff up and send it airborne.

On the fear of new bedding....one time when I changed out all my shavings, you'd think I'd put hot coals down. They would not step foot on it, and complained for hours.
Thankfully they got over it by roost time, then it was hilarious.
I now save out a portion of the old shavings to spread over the new ones, problem solved.

At first I was not going to use the rock, it was to be just the shavings, but at the last minute I had decided to get the rock with the dust free shaving :) :).

Right, but what is the point of the rock?
