We have a mix of 18 month old chickens and 6 month old chickens. We have 16 chickens that were laying between 12 and 14 eggs a day. All of a sudden the chickens stopped laying. We had one or two eggs sporadically but for the most part they have stopped. That has been for the last 8 weeks. With winter coming we are wondering what to do. This has everyone baffled that we have asked. Please help.

It's perfectly normal for your 18month old girls to stop laying now. They probably laid all last winter, and it's time to molt and take a break. This is when folks have to decide if they want to supplement light to try to force laying, feed nonproducing birds all winter, or cull the older birds.

I don't know why your younger birds aren't laying, could be the breed, could be they just came into point of lay too late in the year and they won't start until spring.

The young ones were laying right along with the older ones. We have isa browns mostly. We have left the light on in the evenings to promote laying. We were just surprised that all of them stopped at the same time. How long will it usually take to start laying after molting? Thanks for the info
