Hey there! I'm new to BYC and I'm new to owning chickens. I get my 5 adorable Buff Orpington baby pullets on February 7! They haven't even hatched yet and I'm already way too excited to meet them. I do have a few concerns though. We initially looked at a premade coop with a run on amazon, but the one we really liked is no longer available and nothing else is suiting our needs or meeting our expectations. So, we went on to plan B. The underside of our deck in our backyard is HUGE! We were thinking of just using an old dog house to put the roost and nesting boxes in, but letting the chickens have free reign to the underside of the deck. We are fencing it in with chicken wire of course. I wanted to know if anyone else has ever done this. There is enough room under our porch to stand without any issues, so anyone with a similar situation to this would be the most helpful. I'm curious about how to put a door under there without putting way too much into framing it out. If anyone has ever done this before, please help us and point us in the right direction. Photos would be awesome, too! Thanks so much!!!

My brother in law let his son put chickens under their back yard deck.

It was fun at first for them.

BUT, it was very hard for them to clean. Rather stinky... BUT a window from their basement opened to underneath the deck. The hens always laid in the window well. Easy way to gather eggs.

Eventually they had to abandon the venture as it was just too hard to clean and too stinky.

They ended up eating their laying hens......

Welcome to BYC. Consider a back up plan for housing. Under the deck may work, but is fraught with the possibility of problems.
