Chickens won't stay in yard

I have free range chickens and a little over 5 acres of land that has lots of good places to scratch and get food.

Why is it that my chickens have suddenly decided to go off the property down two neighbors as well as crossing the road? Their coop is out back near the back of the property, they have PLENTY of food and water. They even have to cross a stream to get over here by my house.

Is there something they are searching for that somehow the store bought food, cracked corn, and scratch feed isn't providing them that they need to wander off to find?

Unless you fence them, or move them with portable fencing or a tractor of some kind, they'll continue to cross the road and wander far away onto other folk's property. It is just their nature.
