My baby chicks are pecking away at a 2X4 used to construct their pen. Is this bad for them and if so suggestions on how to get them to stop. Thanks.

I would recommend just putting them in a brooder then move them in to the coop at six to eight weeks old it should be be between 50 to 70 degrees outside.

They are in my basement not the coop. That’s just a pen I made out of some leftover 2X4s. They are in a room with the furnace so it’s warm in there plus the heat lamp. They seem to have slowed down on pecking it. I’m wondering if there was some sap that they liked the taste of.

Chicks will peck at tiny little specks just in case it might be an insect to eat. If an actual insect makes the mistake of landing there, it's done for. They won't eat the wood, no worries.
