I have 7 chicks in my coop now with a mama hen. I noticed they have started to peck at the bedding(it is straw, but its is in tiny enough pieces for them to eat). Its looks like they are trying to eat it. They are 2 days old.

Should I get some paper towels to put over the hay? Also , they are in a chicken tractor that has a ladder..........I dont think the chicks will be able to get up and down it a night. Should I make them a box inside the coop or what?

    Thanks so much!:)

Chicks at this age are still figuring out what is food and what isn't, Grit is imperative because sometimes chicks can't digest the things they eat which aren't food.

Yes, make the chicks and their mama a nice little box or crate where they can sleep each night.

Hi! I really like your forum signature..... it rocks!! Can the chicks eat the same kind of grit my grown and laying hens eat, or do you have to buy them a bigger, special kind?

    Thank you!!
