Hey there, everyone! So, my EE roo, Monty, was the sole survivor of an attack on my flock last month, so I decided to get him some new playmates next week. I'm getting three Ameraucana day-old chicks-- pullets. My question is, after they've been brooded inside for about five weeks, would it be ok to add them right to the coop with my roo? I can set something up where he can see them but not touch them first, if need be (actually, I'll probably do that either way), but I'm wondering how long I should do something like that before adding the chicks with him completely. He's a major gentleman, never even THOUGHT about being aggressive, and he followed my old Welsummer hen around like a lost puppy when he was about five weeks old. I've just never added chicks in with a roo before (especially one who's used to being the only chicken now) and was wondering if any of you fine folks had some suggestions on ways to make the transition easier for all parties. Any tips or advice is welcome and greatly appreciated. Thanks, everybody!!! ETA: Monty is 6 months old, btw. That's why I'm concerned about the chicks being in with him....he's kinda reaching his sexual maturity at this point, right? Is there any chance he'd try to mate them?
