I bought 4 red pullet production chicks at my local co-op the other day. I know many times people end up with a rooster in the mix. Looking back on your chicken experience, do you think you pick out the rooster based on their early personality? I have one that seems to be the leader, keeps a watchful eye while the others are sound asleep. I am debating going and buying another chick.

    Thanks,
    Jen

Yes, sometimes little baby cockerels display an assertive temperament as a chick, but so do pullets with assertive tendencies display those as well.

A better indication will be as the chick nears six weeks and the comb appears much redder than the pinkish yellow of the pullets.
