Chicks won't eat scraps

I have sand on the floor of their coop which they seem to peck at and consume all day long. Does that count as grit?

Fine sand really wouldn't but sand with "chunks" or tiny pieces of rock would. I use dirt from my yard (FL dirt= chunky sand) which works well.

Weirdly enough my chickens are obessed with cheese sticks. They have never became sick or constipated and my kids have fed some pretty young chicks quite a bit, lol! They like it torn into little peices that look like worms.
