I was watching my chickens eat one afternoon. I had given then some scraps. Some of the bread was wet. And one of my bantam hens had gotten a piece of bread and was trying to swallow it AND eat some of the laying mash as well. Bad combination. I noticed her starting to writhe and her eyes rolled back in her head and she fell backwards. I ran in the pen and snatched her up. I could see the food packed into her airway and the only thing I knew to do was to grab a piece of pine straw on the ground and stuck it into her "mouth". I pried some of the food out and immediately heard her take a gasp. I gave her some water and made sure she was ok then put her back. I gathered up the rest of the bread scraps too. And learned a lesson that day. No more soft bread for my chickens!!!

I'd never seen anything like that before. Never thought a chicken would choke on their food but I guess so....
