Out of our 20 hens we had 1 that we had been calling “Bald Chicken”. Her underbelly was un feathered, as were her head, tops/shoulder part of her wings, and front of neck, and all exposed areas were beat red and raw looking. Only 2 of the other 19 hens showed some signs of baldness on heads and underbellies so we determined it had to be lice/mites infestation. We always keep coop clean, we dusted hens once daily with diatomaceous earth, sprinking same under where they roost as their chicken poop can be a breeding ground for pests… Nthing worked. After reading what all others do we finally started adding chopped garlic to their food. We mix about 1/2-3/4 cup garlic to entire bag of layer pellets. Within 6 weeks NO MORE BALD CHICKEN and all others look super healthy! We’ve made chopped garlic from Walmart a staple in their diet. Probably we could cut back, but the hens look great (cheap and ingredients are garlic and ascorbic acid/Vit C as preservative). Eggs do not taste like garlic, and chickens seem to love it.

Please be careful with diatomaceous earth, it's a respiratory irritant for you and your birds. wear a mask when you're in the coop or cleaning it. It's ineffective on mites. They were likely molting unless you saw mites under the roosts.
Garlic can cause constipation on birds so be careful.
