Hi everyone! I have long dreamed of being able to have my own chickens for eggs and to fertilize the garden, but it has been a mere fantasy until now. I recently moved into a house where I CAN have chickens, but being of a certain age, I have never, ever raised one before. I am here to learn and I need to learn a lot more before I begin. But I want to know the easiest, simplest ways to have a few chickens in the middle of a busy schedule. I also own two cats and don't want the chickens to damage our garden beds. Open to any and all advice. I am in Eugene, recently transplanted from the Midwest.

You can always fence off garden beds but, there are times you will want the chickens to turn the soil for you and at end of harvest, to clean up the remains. More likely they will need protection from your cats, especially if you start with baby chicks.

Welcome to the Backyard chickens flock.
