Hello! I'm from Cleveland heights ohio, I'm looking at getting 2-4 chickens. We have two little girls, and I've always wanted chickens! Hoping to get some good egg layers as well as good temperament for the girls to enjoy! Looking forward to this new journey!!

It's really a good idea to get 4 at once so you don't have to integrate new ones to the flock later on. Chickens are flock animals, if you just get two and lose one - you will have a lonely chick on your hands.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Based on your criteria, I would suggest Black Australorps. I've raised them for many years (along with dozens of other breeds) and they are extremely hardy, very calm and gentle (my children, and now my granddaughter, made lap pets of ours), and the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. A Black Australorp holds the brown egg laying record with 364 eggs in 365 days, and while none of mine have ever reached that level of production (and likely never will), I've still had some of them lay over 300 eggs in a year.
