Hi there. I have a 7 month old black sex linked hen that is keeping her right eye shut. Acting normal otherwise. No sneezing, swelling, discharge. Laid an egg this afternoon. Her comb might be slightly paler than normal. Any thoughts?

My first guess would be that she got something in that eye or scratched it, but I'm not 100% sure. Her comb looks OK to me, but I might be wrong.

That's what I thought too. It's not crusted shut and she opens it sometimes. I will smear some Polymycin Ophthalmic ointment in it and see how she fares. I think her comb looks ok too.

I did just get done treating them all for coccidia. Boo... They start their Immune Boost tonight since I couldn't give it to them with the Corid.

I'm a newbie to all this and it's been a challenge so far.

To tell the truth, I've never vaccinated my flock or treated for anything(not saying you shouldn't. It is good that you do). We have no poultry vets around here, so if anyone gets sick, I play vet till they get better :p

Well, I just played vet too. It was easy to smear ointment in her eye. Funny, I just went and got them some scratch and meal worms and she's keeping her eye open just fine to find them! [IMG]

Just saw her standing outside with BOTH eyes shut, like she was sleeping. Strange... Maybe it's time for something else?

Are her tail feathers pointed downward?

No--her tail feathers are up. I think she was just taking a short standing nap! She ate some hard boiled eggs with vigor last night and went to roost a little early, but she's out and about this morning doing normal chicken things. Her right eye is still closed. It's so strange!
