My husband built our very first chicken coop, and I'm very proud of how well he built it, and how much time and effort he put into it.
I'm not sure of the dimensions, but it is plenty big enough for our 9 chickens.
He cut two big slits into it on the backside for ventilation. On the side he created a sliding door to lift for cleaning out the bedding. The roof has hinges so we can lift it, so we can rake the bedding out the sliding door into a plastic tub. He built a swinging roost inside the coop so the girls can work on their balance. The roost is made out of 4 choke chains for dogs, and a 2x4. The roost is hanging from the roof so when we lift the roof to clean, the roost will lift as well, and its out of the way. He's a smart cookie. :)
The coop is sitting on cinder blocks to give the ladies room to walk under it, and to hang the food and water containers under it to keep out of the weather. The coop is in a 10x10 dog lot, and he ran chicken wire on the bottom half of the fence to keep critters out and them in. We will be running chicken wire on top the fence to keep hawks out, as well.
I'm not sure of the correct name, but their mulch is decomposed wood. He says as they scratch the mulch, they will turn their poop and it will help keep the smell under control (so far no smells!)
All in all I do believe he did an excellent job on everything.
We have 3 Leghorns, 3 RIR, 3 Cornish Rocks (bought without knowing what has to be done), and one unknown Bantam.
So, what do you guys think about our Cluck Commander? :)
