Hello, all!
I am a husband and father of three who was born and raised in Northern Michigan, and currently lives in Central Florida. I have been a "back to earth"-er for years, ( I have a collection of Mother Earth News that dates back to the late 70's) and am a veteran of the U.S. Army. We recently purchased 6 RIR chicks about six weeks ago and they have dwindled in number to four, thanks to our new friend, Mr. Hawk. I am uber thrifty, and like to consider myself a master re-purposer. Our chicken tractor was made with pallet boards, plywood, and 80 mil roofing on top of a frame that I built with wall studs, which (other than chicken wire) was the only thing I actually purchased to make our coop. I understand that I cannot post pictures until I make 10 posts, so that will be forthcoming. I decided to get chickens to better demonstrate the cycle of life to my young children, and to provide a better quality of food for ourselves as well. We have 1/2 acre to work with, and we are currently raising a few laying hens for egg production. I intend on building another coop in the coming months for meat birds. I am a survivalist, and enjoy practicing primitive skills and teaching self-reliance to my children. My son is three now, and really gets the hang of things and concepts quickly. This is a new experience for us all, and I look forward to sharing our tribulations and joys with you all. We have so much to learn from our fellow BYCers, and I can't wait. I have been aware of BYC and planning for months with information I gathered from your posts and web links. I LOVE to look at the ingenious inventions that some create. It gets me so inspired. Thank you for BYC, and this forum. At only months of actual chicken time, it has already been indispensable. - C

Sounds like you did a great job with your coop! You should check out SufficientSElf, the sister site, if you haven't already. You might enjoy it there too.
Don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have, and enjoy the site. :D
