cocci?

Anna, You have no information here. Gotta give us something!

Is there somewhere you can order the once a month treatment for cocci? Also is there a once a month treatment of some kind to prevent worms in the birds? I have almost week old chicks and I just feel like I researched on their basic needs and didn't really get enough information about there medical needs. I bought a medicine for cocci when I purchased my chicks to have on hand just in case. That was recommended by the hatchery. I've had a few chicks that still seem to have runny poop, but all the chicks are active and drinking/eating normally. I also mix in the homemade supplement from Lisa at Fresh Eggs Daily into their chick feed, which includes probiotic, brewers yeast and sea kelp ( http://fresheggsdaily.com/2012/12/quick-reference-feed-guide-chick-to.html ) I clean out their brooder twice a day, giving them fresh water twice a day with ACV added to it. Is there anything else I may need to know for their medical needs going forward?

Hi there! New to BYC
I have a silkie who is young maybe about 2 months or so? (i need to start writing it down) She is extremely thin, i just noticed this this morning as i couldn't tell by all her feathering, she is sluggish and won't move. I picked her up and she couldn't support her self. I am wondering if it is cocci, or if she is being picked on and therefore not eating. She is with a group of cochins who are all the same age as her and they are fine, and they are all with my older laying birds which are 4 months old.
The silkies symptoms are: weak, extremely thin, runny poos and very tired where she can't keep her head up.
I have order corid powder but it won't be here until the end of the month (in canada)
I gave her an egg for protein to give her some energy. Once i separated her she went right to the food and ate some of the egg and then went to sleep.
So is it cocci or maybe being bullied so she can't eat?

Not sure if this thread is still active, but my 18 mo old hen has watery poop & stopped eating.

Her comb is still red, she still walks around (slowly), but she's quiet & not interested in food. This is NOT like her usual outgoing, chatty personality. She's an orp & LOVES her treats. On Fri I noticed she didn't plow through the others when i threw scratch down. She mildly pecked. At 1st I thought heat, so I gave her a cooling bath & ended up bringing her inside Fri night. I also noticed yellow in her runny poop.

Over the weekend, she ate & drank little. I put Corid powder in her water. By Tues, she refused scrabbled eggs, drank very little, & pooped clear liquid & green.

On Tues, I also noticed a tiny moving something in the poop. I had to try to save her, so I tube fed some liquids to fight dehydration. Today (Wed) I bought some baby bird formula. I gave 20 cc (am & then pm). She was slowly declining for a few days, but seemed a little perkier today.

Through all of this, I never really saw blood, but I did catch it very, very early. The title of this thread, "Cocci?" applies to me.

I thought egg binding at 1st, but used a lubed glove & felt nothing.
I thought egg peritonitis (laid a mis-shaped egg on Tues), but perhaps a simpler explanation is more practical.
I thought crop issue - but it's been mostly flat & no odor.
I'm wondering about worms, but I don't want to treat both at once & put her in shock.
I decided to finish the cocci treatment 1st. (I don't want to start then stop & create a "super-bug.") I'm not sure how many days to continue, though. I started on Sat afternoon, but she wasn't drinking much water, so who knows how much meds she got.

Any advice? I'd like someone someone with cocci experience to comment about the absence of blood in her stool.

The feedstore I shop at had three you peafowl die a few years ago, so I took their bodies to UC Davis for necropsy. All three had very foamy cecal poop, but no blood, not one drop, and all three died from severe coccidiosis. Someone in the duck forum had a just duck with no blood and it tested positive for capillary worms and coccidia. FWIW, I have used Corid and Safeguard together many times, so I think you could, too. How much does she weigh and how much water are you tubing to her? -Kathy

She's a big English Lav. (Maybe 8 lbs) Cuddles is inside the house so I may monitor her closely. I know 20-3ccs is not enough for her, but I'm very afraid of vomit/aspiration.

I have Wazine (used it Tues on the rest of the flock, but Cuddles barely drank water.)
The poop boards in coop look very normal, but now some have small white specs (maybe dead worms). Again, when I saw the worm(?) in Cuddle's poop, I knew I needed to worm everyone. I read that Wazine should be used 1st b/c a weakened chicken could go into shock if never wormed, then given a strong de-wormer. Wazine will kill off the round worms 1st & then in a week, use another product. It made sense. (Sadly I didn't stock up on eggs before worming. Oh well!)

This is my 1st time tube feeding. She really puts up a fight. I have 20ml syringe with a 16Fr catheter. Kaytee baby bird powder mix + water, "Sav-a-chick" electrolytes, Enfamil drops (no iron), & meds. It's nice to know she's feisty, but I wish she'd try eating on her own. She does make some crop adjusting (yawn-like), head shaking, & a weird, rapid, mouthing with tongue. (Sounds like she's eating/slurping yogurt or banana. One of those hard to describe actions & noises.) That's another reason why I don't want to fill her up too much. I do not think the crop is impacted or sour (no nasty beak smell - but the poop is pungent) The crop was very flat & soft .

Will vets do that w/o seeing the "patient"? Most vets don't handle chickens (here in the suburbs of Chicago), some take parrots. I found one exotic vet a few towns over. The reviews were good, but several reviews said that the bills were $200-600. Out of our price range.

I was way off on her weight. = 6.5 lbs today. Her breed weighs about 8-9 lbs hen & 12-13 lbs roo.

Just an update on Cuddles:
She got worse before getting better. After a few days of barely eating /drinking, I had to do something. I bought baby bird food & made a tube feeder with a syringe & catheter tube. I put the corid in (since she may not have gotten much prior). I saw worms in her poop 2xs, so I followed up with Safeguard after the Corid. I had to tube feed for 3 days & after that she ate a little. Her chatty "talking" returned, but she walked slowly - never ran. I then had to tube feed 1-2xs per day for about 5 days. (It was also a way to make sure she got the de-wormer.. I moved her back outside & her mood brightened. I had to bring her inside each night for "treats" to make sure she filled her crop before going back outside. She became a very fussy eater during this time, but bread & mealworms were usually something I could get into her. Her appetite slowly came back & when I felt her going to bed with a full crop, I stopped the nightly treats.

One thing after another, she started molting during all of this, but at least it's not a heavy molt. She has worked her way back up into the middle of the pecking order & once again bullies the others when it comes to food. I'm still not sure if it was the Corid or the de-wormer that helped. I ended up giving Safeguard to the entire flock for 5 days & followed up with one additional dose 7 days later.

Here she is today - not a very good pic b/c she's molting & looking rather shabby. All of her butt fluff is missing, so she looks deflated.
Can't wait 'til her new feathers grow in & she once again looks like a round fluff ball. For now, I'm just so grateful she's still with me & likes doing her magic tricks. (She's trained to perform a few tricks.)
