Can anyone tell me if I've got a little roo Campine here? I got 4 lovely chicks recently - pullets, NOT straight run - but I'm pretty sure one of them is a little cockerel.

The thing is . . . they are only 2 weeks old. That's too early to tell. But I also have read that Campines have huge combs. And if this is a little girl chick, what the heck is that big pink thing on her head??

This little guy/gal has also just started making a very unusual trilling noise that the other chicks don't make. I haven't caught the sound on video, but you can see how s/he compares with the same age other chicks I got.

Yeppers, you've got a handsome Campine cockerel on your hands! [IMG] 2 weeks is definitely not too early to tell, seeing as with most of my boys I was able to tell at that age.

AAAAAAA! What to do, what to do? I'm an urban backyard chicken owner, and Denver doesn't allow roosters. And I love him already.

Thank you, Alex! Seems like you enjoy your Campine. Do you have several or just one?

I'm so sorry! [IMG]I'm going through something similar, actually, although I live in the country. We've got WAY too many boys, and have to pick and choose. Perhaps you could either advertise here on BYC or give him to a local auction if they on the off chance happen to take cockerels?

You're sooooo right; I LOVE my Alex (as if it's not apparent)! [IMG] She's my first and only Campine so far, sadly. The closest thing I've got is a Sicilian Buttercup who not only looks similar but has a great personality just like the Campine. How about you? [IMG] Is this your only one?

Yes, my only little Campine. I have what I thought was a Sicilian Buttercup too, but have just learned on another thread that she doesn't have all the right features. So she may be a mix of some kind. She's wonderful! Full of personality, a little take-charge gal without pecking the other, bigger hens. She charms my husband by jumping up onto his lap and settling down to be petted. I thought she and the Campine would be fun together.

She sounds like a real gem, just like my Cookie! [IMG] I would love to see pictures of your girl if possible.

You're right, certain chickens just go together like soup and sandwich. Cookie and Alex are adorable when foraging close to each other, and I'm really excited now that I have a couple high-energy Fayoumis to throw in the mix. Wow, I'm really in for quite the time trying to keep up! [IMG] [IMG]
