I'd love a cockerel to go with my hens but my parents don't want one because of the constant noise, is there any certain breed(s) that are known for being a little more quiet whilst doing their morning call?[IMG] thank you!

It's more of an individual thing rather than breed related. And roosters don't just crow in the morning. They crow through out the day and for various reasons. Some hardly ever crow, some crow a lot. And size doesn't really impact volume either. Some tiny Seramas are really loud, and some jumbo breed roosters will have soft voices.
Most roosters aren't any louder than a typical dog barking, and if they are kept in a coop for the morning hours away from the house, you might not be able to hear morning crowing at all.

How many hens do you have? A rooster can handle 10, less than that and overbreeding and damage to the hens can result. Do you need fertile eggs for hatching or selling?

Otherwise roosters are just another mouth to feed that doesn't contribute anything to their care. Hens will continue to lay just as many eggs tho not fertile, without a roo. They tend to be much less stressed when they are being harassed by a rooster.

I totally second DD's post. Roos can be a pain, especially if one is relatively new to raising chickens. Also be aware that a roos morning call can begin from 2am onwards - not at daybreak as one may imagine.

    All the best
