To dry out and make them brittle so that they crumble easily.

They crumble easily enough. No need to do this.

The smell, oh, my, the smell. Do not do this when you can't open windows. Even after 3 hours, DH noticed it when he came home.

Too hot....250-300 is plenty.

I rinse and let air dry, the drier the easier they crumble.
