Cold vs Excited Chick Behavior

I'm moving my 2 week old chicks outside into a heated coop as soon as they turn 3 weeks old, so I've started taking them out on small trips so they get accustomed to the coop. I know that if they are cold they will be extra loud, but people say not to confuse this with excited chicks in a new environment.

How do you tell the difference between whether they are cold or just excited?

Chicks exploring a new environment shouldn't "sound" excited. At most, maybe some soft peeps. Distress peeping is much louder.
