back in april, with 20 random chicks from hoover’s, i never thought i’d get another girl so close to my heart.
in april we got 2 separate shipments and ID’d our chicks. to my dismay there was a little creme colored chick, and upon looking at this little thing, i knew what it was. after that, i paid it no mind.
a year earlier i had lost my first and favorite girl Ming Ming from heat stroke. she was a soft, elegant bird with the prettiest eggs and voice. i didn’t want to replace her, so i never looked in the little chick’s direction once. i was intent on selling her.
2 weeks in, the babies are exploring supervised outside. i’m squatting on the grass with 20 babies running around when a little creme chick comes up to me, jumps up and roosts on my folded hands.
4 weeks in and i bring her up to my room to chill with her in the evening. she nestled up to my neck, clicks her beak, and falls right asleep.
they got to selling age, and something told me not to sell her.
she’s a little rascal now. 11 weeks old, she will jump up onto your arm or your shoulder if she so feels the need (which is pretty often). every time she jumps onto my arms i bring her close to me and pet her, and she clicks her beak and starts pecking at my shirt. i’ve read that the little beak clicking she’s been doing is a sign of contentment, which makes me happy because every time she sees me, she does it.
when i enter the run she dashes straight towards me. when i’m squatting and watching the flock she’ll break off from her flockmates just to sit at my feet and watch everyone with me.
Cleo is only 11 weeks old and she’s already won my heart! i judged her so quickly when she was a baby, just because my heart ached for my columbian wyandotte before her. in a way, it’s comforting. in another way, i’m just glad i got my best friend back.
