Hi - One of my sweet girls comb has changed from a bright red to a pale pink. Her comb is also smaller now, almost like the shrunk. She seems to be acting normal, runs around the yard and is not hiding in the coop. When I bring fruit/veggie scraps out she hustles around for the food with the other hens. She does not appear to have any marks on her as if the other hens were picking on her.

Any suggestions or thoughts? I just want to make sure she isn't sick and it she may be sick I want to treat her and make sure she gets better.

    Thanks All

Well, usually, a hen's bright red and large comb indicates that she is about ready to start laying in the spring (or when she reaches about 20 weeks) or that she is actually laying. Is she laying?

My hens get small pink combs when they aren't laying or are setting and raising chicks.

I do not worry about it at all and haven't ever seen any indication that my hens are sick when their combs are small and pink.

Since she's acting normal in all other respects, you may want to wait for some other sign before treating her for something. But that's just a suggestion.

NOTE: I don't treat for any type of worms since we don't seem to have any health problems related to that. Plus, our ground freezes in the winter.

She will be a year old next month. I will check her to see if she is laying. The last few weeks we've been getting 4 eggs a day and we have 6 hens.

My sweet girl passed away last night. We gave her the spa treatment with an epsom salt bath where she quietly fell asleep in the warm water. I gave her a nice warm blow dry and then wrapped her up in a towel and held her with a lot of TLC. About 30 mins later she passed with my husband and I by her side.

I'm just glad we would make her last moments peaceful.

Oh, dear! Gone? I'm so sorry. It sounds like she did have some lovely last moments, pampered, respected, peaceful, and loved.
