combs shrink?

    Do they get smaller when molting? one of my Marans comb seems to have gotten a lot smaller and she has been in a slow molt a few weeks now.

    Yes, they do. Also when they go broody. That nice plump, red comb is a sign of sexual maturity and fertility, lets the rooster know who's available for mating. When hens are molting, they're usually not laying, and their body isn't in physical condition to brood, so the comb indicates to the rooster she's out of play for the time being. Also happens when a bird gets sick.

    Thanks Donrae, I have a broody Marans too but her comb has always been smaller. I knew they would lose the bright red but never noticed a comb get so much smaller.
