Come on California! Anyone with some rarer, beautiful chickies?

I am on the hunt for some baby chicks. I don't really want to do hatching eggs since I don't have a incubator.
Anyone in CA have any of these? Nice representative quality breeds, good disposition..etc is what I am looking for in these. I want some pretties.

Blue Wyandottes or really any standard heavier breeds that are blue or blue splashed, Orps...etc?
Marans ( I may have a friends parents in law but may turn out to be flakey or adults- I want chickies)
Welsummers
Blue laced red Wyandottes
Or? top hats? Silkies?

Thanks! Seems like Cali doesn't have a lot of people breeding these rarer ones.
Oh and they don't have to be from CA but I do need them shipped. I know the season is almost over and wait lists are long...ho hum..

I have Cuckoo Marans who lay one egg a day, and I am going to put a few in the incubator in a few days, when I get my box of pure Araucana (True Araucana) eggs in the mail. The best I can do is offer them to you when they hatch? That will be in a few weeks. I am in Chico/Forest Ranch, not Central California though.

The big Poultry show in Stockton is coming in January and thats how I got alot of my birds last year, made arrangements here on BYC and met people at the show there! Just start asking now, and then get it all set up. Hey, I may even be able to have some for you there!

The feedstores here carry the Welsummers, I have several Hens but no males right now...I may get a rooster later if I decide to do a breeding program. Just girls for now, though.

Oh, there are several people I know in Redding with Blue laced Red Wyandottes, I maytry to get some next Spring, but dont have any right now....

Good luck, I'll keep you in mind.

Oh, try the Yahoo Group called California Chickens. They have everything, and they are ALL over California

Thank you for keeping me in mind. Lived in Chico for a couple months yrs ago.Hot! Hmmm on the Stockton Poultry show...never been to one. How does that work? Do I just show up, buy tickets and can you buy some chickies? Or do you buy adults etc? Thanks for the heads up on the CA chickens..will check that out.

The show in Stockton this year is supposed to be on January 10th and 11th, 2009 at the Stockton Fairgrounds, its hard to get information I guess, unless you're an insider. I dont show birds, so I dont have a clue, I just love to go to the shows. Here is a page from one I have gone to:

Gold Coast Poultry Fanciers Presents
The 20th Annual California Classic Poultry Show

We look forward to seeing you January 10-11, 2009

There is a sales barn at the show, you can buy whatever they have - for a price. Many of them are show quality or disqualified birds. I bought my call duck, Andrew there. He's awesome.
I made arrangements with several BYC people online here to meet at the show and picked up several silkies, two white roosters and several really pretty hens, and a lovely Jersey Giant (turned out to be a Rooster)...I can even give you their emails if you like, they live near there and sell show birds, Silkies, or could give you their websites. They may not be seeing your posts, but I have met, talked to, or run across a great number of breeders with the birds you are interested in. They're there, it just takes time and patience. I started with three hens, and over 30 varieties on my wish list. I have a small wish list left, and over 100 birds in my flock now! Persistence pays off.

What about the show in Hollister, or the show in Fresno in Feb? Join the APA, suscribe to The Poultry Press, and Backyard Chicken. Call John Monaco in Morgan Hill. He's your APA district representive. I almost forgot Farmers Feed in Gilroy. Paul was building a whole bunch of large sale pens for Fancy Chickens the last time I was there.

It's really neat, pretty huge too! There are several buildings with cage after cage of birds, all show quality, and the most beautiful examples of the breeds! It will make you want them all!! There was poultry of all kinds, turkeys, geese, ducks, chickens, mandarins, everything!
The only annoying part was one of the judges, cause you have to stay out of their way or they get uppity! It is a show after all, and I understand that, but we went down a row one was on (not marked or anything, he was just down there) and he was really rude when he walked by....We're not show people and had no idea what the apparent protocal was, we were just people who drove 3.5 hours to look at pretty birds......didnt mean to rattle his cage....hmmph.....

So watch out for the judges, take a carrier and some cash, you may be able to pick up a bird or two, and have fun!! I think they're awesome, seeing so many lovely birds in one place! I may even see you there myself! I plan on going on Saturday, the 10th.

And no price to get in, thats free. You only pay if you have birds to enter in the show, I guess.
