Confused on what breed of duck/goose this is

It's a gosling - not certain of breed. Where did you get it ? It almost looks like a Canada gosling.

He was purchased at a local feed store, though I wasn't sure exactly what he was when I got him.

Definitely a gosling. Hopefully, you lucked out and paid a duckling price for it because they didn't know what it was either. lol If there are more left, go back and get it a buddy. They do best in groups. @Pyxis might be able to tell you what breed the little fart is.

If you're also brooding chicks (baby chickens) with it, keep an eye on the water/mess situation. Ducklings and goslings have a bad habit of turning their brooders into swamps like wee baby ogres. Which chickens are not a fan of.

i plan to get some chicks for family soon, but i'll keep that in mind

Gosling! Might be a toulouse, though there are several breeds that can look like that. Please do definitely get another one because geese NEED to have at least one other goose flockmate.
