Hi everyone:) I have a question regarding a silkie chick I've decided to keep. I breed these beautiful birds and recently I decided to keep 1 chipmunk baby out of 16 to sell. This chick is approx 3 weeks old. Two days ago I had more hatch and I placed the new 5 babies in with the older keeper for company. My question is why would a 3 week old chick take care of the babies? This chick actually lays on the babies full spread of wings and calls to feed them. The 3 week old is very gentle with them and acts exactly like a mother hen would. Is this common or do I have a potential female or good rooster possibly?

Silkies are always wanting to be mothers, sounds like you have one starting early. I would guess it's a pullet. Was probably lonely too. It is very unusual behavior.
