I am in the process of building a coop and see a lot of designs for automatic doors. My question is how important is it to have the door shut every night if weather and security is not an issue? Can you just leave the door open?

We let ours free range during the day. They all file back into the coop at night and we close up their run which is totally enclosed. In the winter we will probably close their coop door at night to keep them a bit warmer, but for now they don't need it shut. This way if they wake up before we let them out they at least have access to their run with their food and water.
