And eat black-eyed peas and put some raw ones on your front step. Two different traditions, but I'm taking no chances!

I have a culinary friend who always makes black eyed peas for New Year's Day but I've never heard of leaving out dried ones. What's that about?

Yeah, they’re definitely quite expensive now! And weird thing is that’s almost considered “cheap” in some breeds cause some of them go up to like 3, 4, 5K or more! :th mostly in the “rare” and less common breeds but still! Seems quite common for Goldens to be like $2-3K now.

Seems like even just a few years ago most breeders were like $1500-$2000 or maybe $2500 but now most are $2-3K it seems. :th at least in my area! My area is more expensive though. I think if/when I got one, I would look elsewhere as there are areas where they are still cheap haha

I have considered rescues too but even the rescues in my area are like $500-$700 now by the time you add in the “transport fees” and vetting and stuff cause they ship all the dogs up from the south :th so it’s like, you might as well just pay a bit more and get a purebred since you’re halfway there anyway! :th plus the ridiculous requirements most have now!! They wouldn’t even let me adopt probably.

I honestly might just go to Craigslist or something and cut out the middle man :lau 🙈 since they’re the same dogs that end up in shelters anyway! I wouldn’t get a puppy from there of course but could maybe find a nice rescue. Idk.

Everything has gotten so crazy expensive though! Especially the rescues charging purebred prices :th and also the fact they even need to ship dogs since there evidently aren’t enough here :th
If your area has to ship rescue dogs in, that's a GOOD thing. It means that the spay/neuter programs are working. Our local cat rescue, Chesapeake Feline Association, sends cats and kittens to a sister program in Massachusetts on a regular basis. It's wonderful to see the adoption photos of a cat that you fostered or that you know has been languishing in the shelter for over a year. It helps me realize that we really ARE doing a good thing!

They are shipping dogs up from down south here too.
They are adopted the weekend they arrive in most cases. But the problem is they aren't being tested for heartworm etc before adopted

Good morning folks! I hope all are well this morning.
I am a fan of being adopted by my pets and absolutely by cats. Our Marley was found in the storm drain by my sons friend just after I lost the worlds best kitty Boogers. I was too heart broken to be able to transfer my love to another cat at that moment but the gesture brought me to tears a few times. That was 11 years ago and she has been a wonderful kitty if you don't count the couches she has minced.

Our puppy's found Batman in our Lauhala tree a few years back and then basically raised him. He is the closest I have come to my Boogers. He is just a character like she was... well, almost.

Puppies are always HS or similar except the one we bough for AJ. $1,200 plus shipping and crates etc. and we got a deal lol. I like the gratitude of rescues myself and also appreciate a seasoned pal. But Cody is pretty ok for a fancy little guy ;)

I would be so thrilled if my neighbors just opened the door to let out the bad spirits out and banged a bunch of pots to scare them away. That really sounds awesome and if I manage to stay awake, because we will be up the mountain, I just may go out and surprise some deer and pigs with some pan banging! I just don't get the big stuff for days and days and days on end. Poor creatures big and small. 🤦‍♀️ :(

Lots of dogs brought in from elsewhere here too, and although many are tested for heartworm disease, nearly none are tested for tick borne diseases. Hurricane Katrina resulted in many dogs being moved all over the country, and a major spike in all such diseases spreading in new areas. That's continuing, with these traveling dogs, especially.

Yeah, everyone around here spays and neuters! Nobody even really thinks twice about it, it’s just something you do aha and that’s awesome :love

They don’t test them!? :ep :th it must depend on the rescue maybe ? Cause I know most here treat them for it before they go and DB & SIL fostered one for a night so he could get treatments at the vet down the street. Guess he needed two in a row so needed a place to stay. I think they usually either finish treating them in the foster homes or they tell the adopters they have it and they take them anyway. And usually they’re adopted before they even get up here haha

One of our dogs is a rescue (the aussie), who was way too much dog for the full time employed and small-apartment dwelling owners. It was a private rehoming and they were clearly in over their heads. When we got him he was so scared he'd shake and bark at almost anything. People, hats, trash cans, you name it. He's nowhere near so easily startled anymore.

Old Dog was technically bought from an oops litter a farmer had for less than $100, but that's cheaper than any shelter places dogs for and she came vetted (shots and dewormed to 8 weeks). If the puppies hadn't been sold they'd have ended up at a shelter anyhow.

The Killer Husky is AKC. (Registered purebred.) She was $600 and we drove 4 hours one way for her. We were in an apartment at the time with a mostly enclosed back yard and it was a HUGE 3 bedroom with a balcony and this long carpeted hallway perfect for racing down. It was not so much an apartment as a quadplex (like a duplex but with four units, not two.) None of the rescues would adopt to us because we were in an apartment even though we already had one well-behaved large active dog in perfect condition so we bought a puppy instead.

Ironically every time we've tried to rescue from a rescue-rescue we get turned down for various reasons. 9_9; Even though our dogs are great.
