I have had my girls for only 2 months and I'm new to chickens. Can a chicken be allergic to wildfire smoke? 1 of my girls has started coughing/sneezing today after a wildfire broke out here in my area? She has no nasal discharge or facial swelling but she seems a little lethargic.

Does her chest seem to be rattling?

Coughing sounds like sneezing in chickens. They don't really cough.

So yes, it could be due to the smoke inhalation. How bad was the wildfire, and could they have inhaled the smoke?

It could be a fungal infection as well. You can read up on that HERE.

No rattling when she breaths but her beak is slightly open. There are none in Utah but all the smoke from Idaho (about 7 fires) is being swept done to us by the weather jetstream. The sky is a hazy grey. I only mention the smoke because it's irritating my eyes. The other 4 girls all seem fine. I will also check into the fungal infection. Thank you for your time and advice.

UPDATE: Elvira HAS developed a rattle/gurgle. She has been removed from the flock (after a long cuddle with me) but my 2 vets are not answering their phones. Any advice?

I hope my Black Wyandotte Bantam, Elvira, gets better. She's such a gentle chicken.

You can give her a little antibiotic if you have any incase the smoke has really irritated her lungs. If you had any prednisone that would help too..about 5 mg. until you can talk to a vet. If it develops into an respitory infection, Tylan 50 cattle injectable is what is used or Baytril from a vet.

She's a bantam... So I'd give her half a pill to see if it eases her breathing.... Then perhaps talk to a vet in the morning to see what you can do for her.
