Thanksgiving may be 20 days away, but I like to plan events well in advance, down to the smallest detail. My mother and I have been preparing Thanksgiving dinner for about a decade now. When I moved to DC after college I couldn't make it home for the holidays. My mother couldn't stand the thought of me celebrating alone and decided to leave the rest of our family to their own celebrations and began making an annual trek to my location for Thanksgiving. Each year since my mom has followed me to my place of residence for the holiday. We've been fortunate enough to celebrate in the nation's capitol, at the beach, and this year we are celebrating at a beautiful house on a lake in northwest South Carolina.

This year we will have a total of 7 people at our celebration, which is still a relatively benign number but certainly larger than the two at our first celebration! This number includes my husband, his parents, and one of my closest friends and her husband. My mother and I have long ago perfected the menu. Our menu mainstays include Tom Colicchio's Herb Butter Turkey, Bobby Flay's Chorizo Cornbread Stuffing, mashed potatoes, candied sweet potatoes, steamed corn, pecan and pumpkin pies. There are usually a few additional dishes that vary from year to year. Everything seems to be pretty big crowd pleasers on the menu...

...But that brings us to entertainment. No two people agree on ALL music. So attempting to prepare a playlist that appeals to all would be a lesson in futility. It IS, however, possible to prepare a playlist that isn't entirely offensive to anyone. I've attempted to do this for our Thanksgiving this year through Spotify, my favorite music streaming company. I haven't put the music in any type of order but instead enable the shuffle feature. The playlist is long to provide music for the entire day of cooking and visiting. It is varied across artists and genres. You can view and listen to my playlist here.

Creating this playlist has made me curious as to what other people do for the holiday. What kinds of music do you and your family enjoy on Turkey day? Does anyone listen to all Christmas music that day? Do people just turn on the Macy's Day Parade and football instead? Any suggestions regarding my song choices? Anything I'm missing? I appreciate any input!

I only listen to Christmas music at home, at Thanksgiving it's the television and talking, and the usual complaining about how the Christmas stuff is out so early. I personally love Manheim Steamroller, and anything older like Elvis, and Bing Crosby.

I don't really have any song or playlists I listen to for Thanksgiving, but I have tons of Christmas songs I listen to. I would recommend putting Manheim Steamroller Christmas or Enya's "And Winter Came" for background music. Most of the music I listen to isn't good background music.

However, the best Christmas album in my opinion is Francesca Battistelli's "Christmas." She does an amazing job on covering all the traditional Christmas songs, and adds some amazing ones of her own.

Maybe "This land is your land" - written and sung by Woodie Guthrie, but Bruce Springsteen sung a live version on his Born in the USA tour (Springsteen Live 1975-85) which is more likely to be more appealing in this day and age.
